Congress urged to act on green taxi proposals

WASHINGTON, D.C.  — A New York senator and six big city mayors want Congress to allow municipalities to mandate green taxi fleets.

This week, a federal appeals court blocked New York city from mandating a hybrid taxi fleet — the latest setback in Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s three-year effort to mandate cleaner cabs.

“Congress must take action so that communities across the country can move toward hybrid taxi fleets. By creating an-all hybrid taxi fleet, we will improve air quality, lower carbon emissions, and advance the American auto industry,” said Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y. “American car manufacturers would have no better showcase for new, efficient vehicle technologies than the streets of New York City and other major cities across the country.”
