Sturgeon Bay: Third low-cost taxi service will begin service Monday

GREEN BAY, Wisc. — A new subsidized taxi program will roll out in Sturgeon Bay next week, and the competition is already lowering rates for cab rides in Door County.

Door 2 Door Rides will begin service Monday, bringing two handicapped- accessible vans to Sturgeon Bay and offering reduced rates for both regular passengers and those who need assistance.

Abby Vans, owned by Mark Jones of Neillsville, was selected for the five-month contract by Door County Social Services to encourage low-cost, public transportation within about a three-mile radius of Sturgeon Bay. The transportation plan was spearheaded by Door-Tran, a volunteer, nonprofit agency whose long-range goal is to expand the shared-ride service throughout Door County.

Two local cab companies were ruffled by the decision to contract with a vendor outside of the county, but Door-Tran Mobility Manager Pam Busch said the new service would offer a wider range of transportation options. The former voucher program, which halves the cost for a cab ride, is still in place and can only be used by the current cab companies.
