Austin cab drivers claim they make 2.75$ an hour
AUSTIN, Texas — Austin’s taxi drivers rely on events like SXSW for a significant portion of their income. But one driver told News 8 that even with big events and a recent fare hike, Austin cab drivers barely earn a living.
A report released last month by Texas Rio Grande Legal Aid, a nonprofit that provides legal assistance for underserved workers, says the average Austin cabbie makes $2.75 an hour, and 65 percent of them work seven days a week.
“We put in 80 to 100 hours a week to make enough money to live,” Austin cab driver Ann Darbonne said.
